Ask Millie: Busy Betty

Dear Millie,

My boyfriend has been complaining that I don’t spend enough time with him. He isn’t involved in any clubs or anything which makes it harder for him to realize how busy I am with my extra curriculars. I often have other things going on when he wants me to hang out with him. We’ve had a couple of arguments over this and he feels like I should quit some of the things I’m involved in so I have more time to spend with him. I don’t want to quit anything, but I also don’t want him to feel like I’m not making any time for him. What should I do?

Sincerely,

Busy Betty

Dear Busy Betty,

I understand that you want your boyfriend to feel like you care about him, but it’s also important to not let him pull you away from things that you love. These extra-curriculars allow you to do what you love. They also help you to create and maintain friendships. Your relationship is not healthy when your shutting yourself off from the outside world. I would explain this to your boyfriend and emphasize how important these extra-curricular activities are to you. You could also try and persuade him to join some sort of club so he can also build friendships.

I would also schedule out times during the week that you and your boyfriend can hang out together. It can be as simple as studying together. This is showing that you are making an effort to be there for him.

If he still doesn’t support your interests and activities you may want to ask yourself if you want to be stuck in a relationship where your partner doesn’t support you?

Yours Truly,

Millie
