Simpson beats Fontbonne on Louis Joslyn’s OT Goal

by Brock Borgeson

It took 20 Storm shots before a Simpson score, which finally came from Junior Louis Joslyn in the 91st minute, giving Simpson a 1-0 OT victory over the Fontbonne Griffins.

Despite outshooting Fontbonne 20-6 and winning the corner kicks battle 10-3, the men’s soccer team was unable to break the 0-0 stalemate that lasted through regulation.

Louis Joslyn’s 3rd goal of the year came unassisted, and was also his third game-winning goal of the season.

The Storm (5-3) defense was stingy, only allowing 6 shots. Zach McEntee was not even tested in goal, with none of the six Griffins shots being made on goal. He finished without even a save attempt while Fontbonne goalkeeper, Joey Mirth, had to save nine in order to keep the game going.

With the loss Fontbonne falls to 1-6 on the year. Simpson is headed in the other direction, improving to 5-3 in an important momentum game for the Storm as they finish off a five-game stretch on the road.

Simpson will play four home games between Sept. 19 – Sept. 27, all of which come at home. Formidable opponents in Illinois Wesleyan, UW-Whitewater, and Wartburg comprise three of these games.

The men’s soccer team will start this stretch against Illinois Wesleyan, who Simpson beat 1-0 last season. This game will be played at Indianola Middle School due to Friday night high school football games being played at Bill Buxton Stadium that evening. The scheduled start time is 7:30 p.m.
