Women’s soccer comes away from Buena Vista with draw

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The women’s soccer team got into the points column in conference play through some late-game heroics Wednesday.

Sophomore Mackenzie Stump got the Storm even with Buena Vista at 1-1 in the 88th minute coming off of a Heather Adolph assist.

Buena Vista’s Tori Carson got the Beavers their initial 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute. This was Carson’s seventh goal of the season. No team would add another goal through 2 OT periods, with the score staying 1-1 through the final whistle.

This was Stump’s team-leading third goal on the season, and one that was reminiscent of Katelyn Behounek’s 89th minute-Hail Mary goal that sent Simpson (2-9-1, 0-1-1 IIAC) into overtime with Grinnell College earlier this season.

The Storm were not able to muster up a single shot in either overtime as the Beavers (3-4-3, 0-1-1 IIAC) outshot Simpson 4-0 in the extra periods. Three of goalkeeper Kristin Riley’s ten saves came after regulation, helping Simpson hold onto the draw.

Next up for the Storm is Luther College as they travel out to Decorah for a 2 p.m. kickoff with the Norse on Saturday, Oct. 4. Luther currently boasts a stellar 10-1 (1-1 IIAC) record.
