Women’s soccer goes into second straight 2OT, but fall to Luther College

by Brock Borgeson

DECORAH, Iowa – Simpson was only 35 seconds from a draw with a potent Luther College team before Luther’s Elli Bunz scored the golden goal to steal a 2-1 win over Simpson on Saturday.

Simpson (2-11-1, 0-2-1 IIAC) was in the lead for 73 minutes of play after Mackenzie Stump scored her team-high fourth goal of the season to give the Storm a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute.

Despite allowing 41 Norse (11-1-0, 2-1-0 IIAC) shots Simpson was somehow able to maintain a 1-0 advantage until the 81st minute when Luther’s Madison Speer tied the game up 1-1 coming off an assist from Erin Wilson.

Neither team scored in the remaining nine minutes of regulation, or throughout the first overtime. Luther broke the tie with Bunz’s goal in the 110th minute, giving Simpson their second 2OT loss of the season.

Kristin Riley continued to be a workhorse in the box, making 15 saves on Luther’s 17 shots on goal, just two saves short of the saves record for an individual game at Simpson.

Simpson was only able to put a meager three shots on the Norse goal.

Women’s soccer will divert their attention from conference play this week as they head up to Minnesota to face St. Catherine’s at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
