Women’s basketball shoots their way to 77-70 victory at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa – Women’s basketball shot 24-48 from the field, knocking down 24 free throws as they took down Wartburg College on the road Saturday afternoon.

Britney Boland hit a key jumper late in the game to push the Storm over the edge, giving them a two-possession advantage on their way to the 77-70 win.

MacKenzie Haupt scored a team-high 18 points as Brittany Hedrick and Boland put up 13 points.

Bobbi Burrows scored 20 for Wartburg (10-5, 1-3) although it wasn’t enough for the Knights as they dropped their fourth game in their last five contests.

The Storm held a 71-68 advantage with only 30 seconds remaining although that’s when a Whitney Van Wyk rebound setup the buzzer-beating jumper from Boland.

A series of free throws followed for the Storm as they sealed up the seven point win.

Despite the win, Simpson (12-3, 2-2) were dominated on the boards, being outrebounded 26-34- the fourth straight game in which the Storm have been outrebounded.

Right now Simpson sits at 12-3 and 2-2 in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, good for fifth place in the conference.

The road doesn’t get any easier for Simpson as they host first place Luther College on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m.

The Norse come into play at 14-1, 4-0 in the IIAC.
