Simpson College will be hosting the production “The Moors” for the first play of the school year.
The Moors is not your traditional play, as it has several unique elements of drama and humor along with a focus on contemporary issues such as loneliness and companionship.
The play takes place on the English Moors where a governess and a moor-hen change the landscape for two sisters and a dog.
Haley Brummett, who plays the other sister named Huldey, found the costuming and stage environment helpful for building the character.
“In rehearsals, it helps having the skirts and corsets which helps me separate that I am going from myself to Huldey. I feed off everyone else on stage,” Brummett said.
Jennifer Nostrala, Director of Simpson Productions, hopes audiences will find multiple themes in the show.
“This play is a mix between comedy and some tragic elements. The play offers some really interesting opportunities for the performers and audience which I think will lead to a very entertaining and engaging performance,” Nostrala said.
Brummett describes the production as a roller coaster of themes and emotions.
“There are really serious and meaningful moments but then there are parts where it is like why are we singing? There are the funny parts and then there are scenes with more depth to them that make you think harder afterwards,” Brummett said.
Being in theater production has been a fun experience for the cast.
“I love getting to experience all of the different characters whether that be my characters or others. It is so interesting to see how different people bring their characters to life,” Brummett said.
The Moors will take place in the Blank Performing Arts Center on October 10-12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $9.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors and non-Simpson students, $6.50 for group tickets, and free for Simpson students and employees with IDs.
