Looking for more things to do on campus? Do you enjoy free events and rewards for attending? Simpson’s Campus Activities Board (CAB) has made some changes that may interest you.

This year, CAB has introduced a new addition that you may have noticed on the back of your student ID. There is a QR code that can be scanned when you attend events, and CAB can then keep track of how many events you have gone to. Rewards will be given out once a student has come to enough events. For example, attend five CAB events and win a hat.

Associate Dean of Students, Rich Ramos, stated that he hopes the rewards program will encourage more students to come to events.

“It is a way to keep track of who is coming to what events, and we hope to be able to use that information to market to a broader audience,” Ramos said. He also mentioned that the QR code scanning does not collect any personal info, just name and year.

CAB has also planned new events this year, as well as brought back a few favorites. Abby Fry, the Live Events Executive for CAB, talked about what she was excited about this year.

“One of the new CAB events I’m most excited for includes Alex Ahn. He is a pop violinist, and I am not a huge fan of classical music, so to see that twist on it will be very interesting,” Fry said.

Fry also mentioned the future headphone disco events they will be putting on this upcoming semester. “We had it last semester, but it was last minute, so we didn’t get the attendance we wanted, but those that did come said it was one of their favorite events of the year,” she said.

A headphone disco consists of multiple DJs playing music while participants have their own headsets and can choose what DJ to listen to. Silent discos have been gaining traction in recent years, but one upcoming event has been a tradition for decades.

“Homecoming is a fun week and I’m excited to get back to normal after the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ramos said. “There are still challenges for us, but we are expecting to have a great turnout this year.”

Homecoming will take place in the second week of October this year.

“Students should get out and take advantage of things such as the free movie website or cheap tickets at the movie theater on weekends,” Ramos said. “You don’t need to go to live events if you don’t want to, but there are still other options to enjoy your time here.”

The importance of social media was emphasized by Fry.

“Make sure to follow our social media. We are always posting and promoting our events or asking for student feedback. There’s last minute events, and I don’t want people to miss out. Some of the best times I’ve had at college were at CAB events, and people shouldn’t let opportunities pass them.”
