Since I was a little girl, I had big dreams of becoming a doctor- the whole lab coat, messy signature, white tennis shoes and scrubs look. I even went to a high school that allowed me to have a specific focus on a medical career.

By the time I left high school, I completely dropped the idea of saving lives to wanting to have my own business. I had plans from creating a coffee shop to figuring out how a bakery works. Both ideas have already been taken, by the way.

In the middle of my college career, I took an art class and became hooked on colors. Imagine all I can do to communicate my life through art. Oh my gosh, Communications! What an awesome major to have, let me drop business for that!

Long story short, I have no idea what I want to do right now, but I’m also the happiest I have been in my college career. Thinking about life after college has opened new ideas of what to do with my life. Should I go to graduate school? Take a year off and do volunteer work? Travel the world? Join a traveling gypsy caravan?

I have currently started a mission to become president of the United States while becoming the greatest Olympic curler known to man, and retire with my own traveling show that seeks out the craziest looking animals on earth. I may still open up the bakery, or maybe a chocolate factory instead?

The bottom line is there are so many directions that your life may take and so many opportunities that you may not have realized would be so worthwhile.

This is my advice for all students: Don’t worry about what your major is, because life may have plans different than what you expect.

While networking and branding may help employers notice you, don’t spend every day worrying about that. The time you spend on and off campus can do more wonders than just social media alone.

Not sure what to do as an underclassman? Take music lessons, join an interesting organization or start something that involves what you’re passionate about and bring it onto campus. That’s the joy of being in a liberal arts college; your options are limitless.

And to all my seniors who are stressed about life after school, my advice is to not limit yourself to a major when looking for jobs or constantly question volunteering versus graduate school. Apply to jobs that involve all your interests if you can, and let the chips fall where they may.

Last advice: Don’t be afraid to try something new after college as well. Whoever said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks clearly was a cat person.

Trying new things and meeting new people is the best part of life. Remember that this school is just a stepping-stone, and that you make your own future.
