Before my senior year began, I wasn’t registered as a full-time student; I was sitting at 10 credits, and assuming I’d figure it out when I arrived on campus. This was a problem because if I wasn’t registered as a full-time student, I would be ineligible to practice and compete in my sport.
I wasn’t sure what my plan would be, but I knew I’d come up with one. Then, one August day at a Sir Mix-A-Lot concert, I got a text asking if I would take on the copy editor position for student media.
I was already enrolled in student media as a staff reporter. Still, the class was only two credits, so this opportunity was perfect: I could adjust my schedule to register for the four-credit leadership position, putting me at full-time, and I didn’t have to conduct any interviews. A double win.
To be honest, this was my primary reason for taking the position. I had procrastinated so long on figuring out a plan for my class schedule that I took the first opportunity that presented itself.
As it turns out, I set myself up pretty nicely. Being the copy editor for student media has taught me a lot: patience, flexibility, time management, patience, managing deadlines and more patience. Though it also led me on the path to find my career.
Before this year, I had concerns about my future because the plan I had set for myself in previous years was falling apart. My passions changed, and I began to get nervous about what I would do after graduation.
Through my experiences in this position, however, I secured an internship that ultimately led me to a full-time job in public relations.
Did I love being a copy editor? Not always. Did I put off editing stories at times? 100% (sorry, Makayla). I literally put off writing this, too. But ultimately, I can’t complain about the opportunity this position offered me.
I truly don’t think I would’ve found my desired career if I hadn’t signed up to do it. So basically, the moral of the story is that procrastination is the key to success.
With most things in life, I always tell myself, “I don’t know how it’ll get done, but I’ll get it done.” Obviously, I got it done, and I think I did a pretty good job. #fighter #kaelynout
