The Simpson College men’s gymnastics team hosted the United States Military Academy West Point in its home debut at Fiterman Training Center on Feb. 21, 2026. The meet came down to the last rotation, and the energy was building with each rotation as it got closer to the end.
Senior Milo Staley competed on the high bar, vault and pommel horse, and provided great energy to the team throughout the meet, despite coming up short 303.200 to 303.350. Regardless of the loss, the team still broke the school record.
“It felt surreal to finally be able to compete in our own space, and it has been a very long time coming, and I think being in our own facility really helped with the energy and contribution to the score since we are so used to the equipment and environment, ” Staley said.
This was a record-breaking meet across multiple events for the Storm, as they set program highs on rings with a 52.000 and parallel bars with a 50.100. An event title and school record score of 13.300 was also acquired by junior Tristan Shorey on the parallel bars.
The Storm was able to gather 11 top three finishes through the six events, with five of those being first-place finishes. However, the Black Knights still came out on top, winning three of the six events and ultimately scoring 0.150 more than the Storm.
Junior Brian Rollison came in first on rings, which helped the Storm set the program record for the event.
“After I stuck my dismount, which is a huge deal for me since my dismount has been pretty difficult for me to stick in the past, I knew that was the energy shift the guys needed,” Rollison said.
The new gymnastics facility has also been greatly appreciated by the gymnasts, as it has given them a true home.
“The first meet in the Fiterman training center was awesome, the space is perfect for a gymnastics meet because it isn’t too small or too big, and it keeps it pretty loud most of the time,” Rollison said.
The next home meet for the storm is on March 7, 2026, where they will host the University of Nebraska and Greenville University.
“We continue to exceed expectations, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has to offer,” Staley said.
