Ask Millie: Stressed Sam

Dear Millie,

It’s my senior year at Simpson and we’re already a fourth of the way through the year. I can’t believe how fast things are going. I feel like I am not ready to be on my own yet.

Having the responsibility of paying bills and living on my own is intimidating. I am worried that I won’t be able to get a job after I leave college. I don’t want to be a disappointment to my family.

I know it’s still early, but I’m still worried. What should I do?

Sincerely,

Stressed Sam

Dear Stressed Sam,

Leaving college and being on your own can seem scary. Don’t worry, everyone else is feeling stressed as well. When you’re doing new things for the first time, you’re going to struggle, but remember you’re learning and the next time will be easier.

Your family will still be there for you to call if you have questions. They’ve had to go through the same things you will, and should understand you may need help from time to time.

If you are worried about getting a full-time job, I would talk to career services. They are there to help students locate jobs and internships. The sooner you start looking for jobs, the more likely you are to find something that will work for you.

Remember this is likely your first full-time job and not to be picky. You’re likely not going to have your dream job right out of the gate.

Just remember life is about change. You’ve spent years getting ready to head out on your own. Think of all the great new things you’ll be doing after college.

Yours Truly,

Millie
