Wrestlers send two to nationals

The Storm will be sending two wrestlers to the National Championships in freshman Clint Manny and sophomore Bart George.

Manny finished second at 149 pounds to earn an automatic bid to nationals. Manny, the #4 ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, is 36-8 this season with 12 pins.

“Going to Nationals was a goal I had coming in,” said Manny.

“I’m just happy it happened this year and hopefully it’ll help me get some good experience at the national level.”

His 36 wins are the ninth most in a season by a Storm wrestler and is a record for freshman in the Storm program.

Manny has high goals for the national tournament.

“I would really like to place high,” said Manny. “I wrestled well last week against Kurth and he’s been there before.”

Manny lost in the finals to George Kurth in overtime 9-7

George was awarded one of the 14 wildcards that the Iowa Conference receives to nationals. George as qualified for nationals for the second straight year.

He is 34-12 this season with 14 pins. His 34 wins are the 11th most in a season by a Storm wrestler. He has posted a career record of 60-25 for Simpson.

The Simpson wrestling team moved up two spots to #17 in the seventh Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Team Poll.

Defending national champion Augsburg is ranked first followed by defending Iowa Conference champion Wartburg. UW-LaCrosse is third followed by King’s College (Pa.) and Upper Iowa.

The Iowa Conference has a total of eight teams ranked in the top 30. Buena Vista is seventh, Loras is eighth, Luther is 10th, Simpson is 17th, Coe is 21st and Central is 30th.
