The first annual Halloween Fashion Show, put on by the members of LGBTQA, will take place on Oct. 30 in the BSC. The doors will open at 8:30 p.m. and the show will last for one hour starting with the first act at 9. There are 21 acts signed up for the show so far. Monetary donations taken at the show will go towards the AIDS Project of Central Iowa.

While the group is leader-free, they do have an advisor, CoryAnne Harrigan, associate professor of English.

“This wouldn’t be a very inspiring community if all we are doing is academic work,” Harrigan said. “It’s a good idea to reach out to the campus community and remind people to keep the causes we support in mind and a Halloween show, as well as the drag show, is a good way of letting your guard down.”

LGBTQA holds the annual campus drag show during the spring, but the members wanted to have a similar event during the fall and wanted to incorporate fashion with it. The members wanted to create another event that had the same kind of energy that the drag show did.

“The fashion show is a non-threatening way to introduce the club,” sophomore LGBTQA member Mary Tharp said.

Sophomore Meghan Klinkenborg agrees that the fashion show is less threatening of a prospect then a drag show and looks at the fashion show like trick-or-treating for adults. She thinks that since college students are too old to trick-or-treat, this is another way to dress up and have a good time.

Sophomore Kyle Letendre is looking to get more awareness across campus for LGBTQA and for the Aids Project of Central Iowa.

“We are involving the whole community for the fashion show,” Letendre said. “Only students can participate in the show, but anyone in the community can show up and watch.”

The members of LGBTQA encourage everyone to dress up and those who are involved in the show will have the chance at prizes. There are prizes for best costume, best celebrity costume and best couple or group. The members will also be dressing up to get into the theme of the show.

“I really love Halloween,” sophomore LGBTQA member Marie Wittry said. “It’s my favorite holiday and growing up I liked dressing up. The fashion show is going to be a blast!”

The fashion show was originally planned to be on Oct. 10, many students are a part of LGBTQA as well as the Opera. By pushing the date back, everyone who wanted to be involved to be there.

“It’s going to be really cool,” senior LGBTQA member Alex Bardole said. “It will break people out of their shells to have some fun.”
