Observation of MLK Day

Simpson hosted its annual Martin Luther King Jr. observance on Monday, Jan. 17.

Hymns and speeches filled Smith Memorial Chapel and students listened to a keynote address by Ed C. Barnes, executive director of Willkie House, Inc., which is a Des Moines organization that offers programming for young people. Barnes challenged the audience to find truth, oppose wrong, protect innocence, promote good and do right – the five principles outlined by King during his life.

Juniors Amina Nwabueze and Staaja Johnson performed an interpretive dance during a poem that was written by Nwabueze entitled, “Join.” The poem urged humans to overcome racism.

A record number of 21 Simpson students then attended a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Event at Grand View College following Simpson’s ceremony.

Pulitzer Prize winning collection on display at Simpson College

David Peterson, former photojournalist for The Des Moines Register for 30 years, donated his Pulitzer winning photo collection, Shattered Dreams: The Rural Crisis, to Simpson College.

The exhibit contains photos from the Iowa Farm Crisis during the summer of 1986 and was presented by the Iowa History Center at Simpson College.

Peterson had been photographing the campus and student experience for Simpson for over a year, earning the college two awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

The photo collection is on display in the Red and Gold Room in College Hall now until Feb. 3.
