College names executive director for Culver Public Policy Center

Steve Griffith, senior vice president and academic dean, announced Monday, Feb. 7 through an e-mail message that Mary Sheka was named executive director of the John C. Culver Public Policy Center.

According to the release, Sheka most recently served as senior advisor to Iowa First Lady, Mari Culver, before accepting the position with Simpson. Prior to that Sheka was a counselor at Dowling Catholic High School and Southeast Polk Schools, and served as a commissioner on the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service among working on other service projects in Iowa, Kentucky, Colorado and Venezuela.

John Epperson, professor of political science, has served as director of the center to this point, and according to the e-mail from Griffith, will serve as director of the Culver Fellows Scholarship program and “will provide leadership for several of the center’s upcoming projects.”

Lilly Scholarship deadline is approaching

The Feb. 18 summer internship deadline from Center for Vocation and Integrative Learning (CVIL) is just around the corner, and Associate Dean Jim Hayes is encouraging students to turn in applications. Scholarships available, according to an e-mail from Hayes, include the Lilly Internships and Ministry Internships of $2,500 in addition to a living stipend.

Crime Log

An incident was reported on Sunday, Feb. 4 of a simple assault that took place on Saturday, Feb. 3 around 11 p.m. at the Washington Apartments. According to the report with campus security, it was a “report of simple assault at Washington with no injuries.”

The student was cited and released, according to the crime log.

A police report was filed with the Indianola Police Department.
