Kappa Theta Psi and Lambda Chi Alpha will be hosting their first basketball charity tournament for the United Way on March 5.

Freshman Dustin Peters believes the event will be a good idea in the midst of March Madness.

“It’s a good opportunity to get out there and it’s for a good cause,” Peters said. “It’s the best of both worlds.”

All donations raised are going to the United Way of Central Iowa. A place for donations will also be available for those spectators not participating in the 3-on-3 tournament.

“Their [United Way of Central Iowa] main concentration is on low-income socioeconomic areas,” Peters said. “They insure that different people can get necessary education of the need assistance with education. If they need assistance with living they can get that funding. They can make sure they have food on the table. All around it is an excellent organization.”

According to the United Way of Central Iowa’s Website, the organization believe by making steady advances together, we can create opportunities for a better life for all.

The focus of their help is in education, income and health.

Peters believes this event is important on three levels.

“One it’s important so we can actually give back to the community,” Peters said. “Second is that we are showing (that) Greek life is important on Simpson College campus. We do something for the school, we participate in school activities, and we do create activities. Third, I think it creates a better bonding between two fraternities.”

Freshman Ben Lempka thinks another factor is the event would be a fun way to help raise money.

“We like helping people, and this is a fun way,” Lempka said. “Obviously there is a prize, but it’s more than that because you’re helping United Way of Central Iowa.”

Sophomore Tyler Fuller is looking forward to the benefits that it will bring to some of the less fortunate.

“I think it is very important to give back to the community,” Fuller said. “I know that I have been blessed in my life, but others may not have been as blessed.”

The cost to enter a team is $15. Teams can be made up of three to five students or faculty.

“Hopefully this becomes an annual thing for Simpson College,” Peters said.

It is encouraged that teams are made up of five members so the cost per teammate is lowered. The number of teams registering is unknown at this time. There is a grand prize of $75 to Sports Page.

The 3-on-3 basketball tournament will begin at 1 p.m. in Cowles Fieldhouse.
