The Simpson baseball team is currently at the top of the conference with everyone playing well, especially with the help of two new additions to this year’s squad.

It all began last year when senior twin brothers from Lincoln, Neb./Northeast High School Justin Svehla and Trent Svehla transferred at the beginning of their junior year from Coe to Simpson College.

“Coe was not the best situation for me, and I had visited Simpson and talked to Coach Blake during my senior year in high school,” Justin said. “I was also very close to coming to Simpson to start college, so I knew it was a place that could end up as a good fit for me.”

It was a little different for Trent though, being that he decided to change majors and study Actuarial Science at Simpson College.

“I felt that Simpson gave me a better opportunity in this field,” Trent said. “Additionally, the proximity of Simpson with Des Moines presented a good opportunity for an internship or potential job with an insurance company.”

Justin has played for Simpson since his junior year, whereas Trent started playing this year and plans on only playing this year.

It was a little weird for Justin when he did not have his brother Trent playing baseball with him.

“It is good to have him back,” Justin said. “Whenever I need someone to hit with or throw with I can go workout with him.”

Not only is this pair happy to be together, but so are their teammates.

“I think it is great having both of them on the team from a personality standpoint and player standpoint,” said senior teammate Mike Huyser. “Both of them are hard workers who get their work in during practice and the results have shown.”

The Storm is off to a good start so far this season, being 8-3 in the Iowa Conference. A lot to do with this is their team chemistry.

“It is great to play at Simpson because we have a great group of guys, who are all working for the same goal of winning the conference,” Justin said. “We are also a very close team off the field and I think that has helped build chemistry on the field.”

Not only does the team stay strong but the coaches make a huge impact as well, making it an enjoyable sport to play.

“I like the playing atmosphere here at Simpson,” Trent said. “Coaches bring a relaxed, yet serious when we need to be attitude and the players have great team chemistry.”

Trent has made an impressive showing so far this season after being named Division III National Player of the week which was a few days after he was named Iowa Conference Athlete of the week.

The Storm’s next opponent will be Buena Vista on Friday, April 22.
