Since it began in August, construction on the Kent Campus Center has been continuing without delay.

“Everything is going as expected,” said Rich Ramos, director of student services, who serves on the board that oversees the construction.

Ramos said time is the biggest challenge when it comes to coordinating construction. Every office that is looking to schedule events in the new center goes through meetings, and Ramos said managing everyone’s schedule has proven to be a challenge.

“It affects a fair amount of folks across campus,” Ramos said.

Construction workers are working 40 hour weeks to complete the building. While the project has gone smoothly, there was a little mix up near the beginning.

“We had a little bit of material delivery problem delays with our structural steel, but we’ve worked through that,” said Ken McCormick project manager for Graham Construction. “It’s on schedule now.”

McCormick said that while there had been small changes to materials and layout, there have been no additional rooms or plans that weren’t in existence for the Kent building itself.

One possible addition to future plans is a new game room. Sophomore Addi O’Conner, a Student Government Association (SGA) senator, sent out a mass email to the student body asking for participation in a survey to find out people’s opinion of the idea.

“Our (SGA’s) role is just to get people’s opinion,” O’Conner said. “It has nothing to do with funding or budget requests, we are simply getting opinions and letting Dean Thorius know what people think.”

Pool tables, foosball, air hockey, arcade games and ping pong have all been suggested as possible fixtures for the game room. Accessories, such as pool balls, paddles, etc., would have to be checked out from the information desk at the new student center.

Because Kent’s foundations have already been laid, a game room would not be inside the actual center, but O’Conner said there were two possible locations in Cowles.

The first location would be where the pool is now, alongside the planned new weight room.

The second location is the current wrestling room, which will be right next to the doors of the student center.

“In my own opinion, I like that location better than the other, because it’s right next to the student center,” O’Conner said. “It just makes sense.”

Because things are still being discussed, O’Conner said the SGA is still open to opinions on the game room and its location.

Construction is expected to be finished by October of next year.

Ramos said while there are no current plans for the grand opening of Kent, they are tentatively planning a grand opening to be on or around homecoming weekend.
