Simpson swimming started 2013 on a good note Saturday, especially for the men who set three school records and defeated a conference opponent.

The men defeated Coe 118-101 for their first win of the season thanks to eight events won by James Tillison, Kyle McKim and Stephen Schmidt.

Tillison broke the 1,000-meter freestyle school record by 56 seconds that was broken last season by Nathan Schneider. What is even more impressive is that Tillison won the race by nearly a half minute with a time of 11:17.62.

Tillison, a freshman from Ada, Okla., wasn’t done winning with that impressive performance.

He also won the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:01.68 and the 200 meter butterfly in a fast 2:25.23.

McKim came into the meet with the school records of the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke, and not only did he win in both of those races, he also broke those record he had set earlier in the fall.

McKim held his ground in the 100 with a time of 1:05.55 as well as coming in at 2:26.66 in the 200.

Schmidt won the 100 and 200 backstroke while making his season debut.

The women were seeking their first win of the season, and while captain Megan Lein won two events, the team fell short to the Kohawks 160-72.

Both of Lein’s wins came in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Simpson will travel to Poweshiek County to partake in the Grinnell Invitational next week.
