Charles Zanders resigns as men’s basketball coach

Last week, Charles Zanders resigned as head men’s basketball coach at Simpson College after five years with the Storm.

Athletics director, Brian Niemuth, made the announcement officially on Monday although Zanders was removing items from his office in Hopper Gymnasium as early as last Friday night, preparing for the resignation.

After leading Hoover High School in Des Moines to a state championship in boy’s basketball, Zanders struggled, going 41-88 during his five seasons with Simpson, taking the Storm to the Iowa Conference tournament only twice, in 2011 and 2012.

Zanders finished the season 6-19, 1-13 this season, finishing last place in the conference.

Zanders also taught coaching classes in the Sports Science and Health Education Department at Simpson.

Assistant coach Brandon Stromer, who has been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Simpson after spending three seasons as a an assistant at Drake University, will take over as interim head coach.

A national search is underway to fill Zanders’ position as Simpson looks to reorient their men’s basketball program, losing only one senior from this year’s team that played significant minutes.

Further information and reactions are to follow.
