Williams gets his yards, Storm fade away in loss to Elmhurst
September 26, 2015
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson’s defense did all they could to contain Elmhurst running back Josh Williams, but in the end it didn’t matter. The senior running back got his yards.
Coming into the game averaging 213.5 rushing yards per game, Williams ran to the tune of 122 yards on 28 attempts and two touchdowns Saturday as the Bluejays (3-0) won 31-12.
The Storm (1-2) looked strong in their first series, running the ball down the field with ease using the running back tandem of Jordan Beem and Davey Jergens. The drive culminated with a Caleb Frye 12-yard touchdown pass to Devin Norman to put the Storm up 6-0 after a missed extra point.
Simpson forced a three-and-out on Elmhurst’s first drive, but the momentum was short-lived after Caleb Frye threw a pick-six to Sean Wetherell in Simpson’s next possession, putting Elmhurst up 7-6.
After a couple drives that produced nothing for both sides, Elmhurst put together a lengthy six minute drive that ended with a 31-yard field goal to give the Jays a 10-6 lead that they would take into the half.
The start of the second half saw Elmhurst pick up right where they left off.
An uncharacteristic amount of passes from quarterback Drew Domino caught the Simpson defense off guard as the Bluejays marched into Storm territory on the first drive of the half. The drive set up an eight-yard touchdown scamper from Williams as he took a crease up the middle into the end zone.
Simpson’s offense put together a solid drive on their first series of the half, but couldn’t capitalize. The Storm started on their own 28 and maneuvered all the way down to the Bluejay seven yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
The Storm defense responded, however, forcing an Elmhurst three and out on the next series.
This time, the Storm would capitalize.
Simpson took to the air again to find the end zone on a Caleb Frye 30-yard bomb to Jackson Redmond. The Storm would go for two on a jet sweep, but Travis Tupper would be stopped just short of the end zone to leave to score Elmhurst 17, Simpson 12.
Elmhurst would tack on two more touchdowns and the Storm would fail to score again.
Caleb Frye was 9-20 for 126 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a game that seemed to indicate that Frye would be the go-to quarterback for the Storm.
Sophomore Sammy Sasso did go 5 of 6 for 41 yards late in the fourth quarter.
Davey Jergens led the Storm on the ground with 15 rushes for 67 yards. Devin Norman had a solid game at wide receiver, catching four passes for 66 yards and a score.
Clay Finley and Justin Sheppard both racked up seven tackles, one of which was a tackle for loss for Sheppard.
Sophomore kicker Drew Jensen was 24 of 24 on PATs before missing his first attempt on Saturday.
The Storm are at home next Saturday, Oct. 3 when they open up Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play against Buena Vista at 1 p.m.
