Ask Millie: Healthy Henry

Dear Millie,

I’ve been trying to eat healthier over winter break and been doing a decent job. Now that I am back at Simpson, I find myself slipping back into my old habits.

I find it hard to eat healthy while there are unhealthy options everywhere. It’s so easy to pick up a burger at Tyler’s or pizza from Pfeiffer.

What are some suggestions you have for eating healthy while at Simpson?

Sincerely,

Healthy Henry

Dear Healthy Henry,

Eating healthy at college can be difficult when you don’t have anybody but yourself to tell you what you should and should not eat. It’s up to you to use self-control.

If you eat in Kent I would suggest ABP or a smoothie from Red Mango. Most of the smoothies are pretty decent from Red Mango. I wouldn’t use this as a meal for every day since you need other nutrients as well, but you can a few times a week or as a breakfast option.

ABP is a great place to get a salad or a healthy sandwich. Make sure you’re loading up on vegetables and not using fattening toppings like bacon. Stay away from the bakery section. The muffins and pastries are not going to help you reach your goal.

While at Pfeiffer the salad bar is always a good option. Try keeping away from the dessert table and ice cream machine.

Also, stay away from pop and sugary drinks at any place you eat. Drink water or low-fat milk instead. These add a lot of calories to your diet that you may not think about.

Hope these tips help.

Yours Truly,

Millie
