November is National Veterans and Military Families Month. Simpson College recognizes and supports military personnel and veterans for their service.

This week’s spotlight is senior Kasiah (Ehresman) Brown.

Hometown?

Sully, Iowa

What branch are you serving in? When did you join?

Army National Guard. I joined in January 2019 and have a six-year contract.

What has your experience been like? Do you have any memories of your experience?

I’ve only completed Basic Training and AIT, but so far I have learned so much about myself and about the Army as a whole. I’ve gotten to do some really cool things that most people will never get to do in their lives, like shooting light-up targets in the dark with an M4 rifle, rappelling off towers, going through a gas chamber, doing fitness obstacle courses, using night vision to do missions at night and so much more.

Why did you enlist?

I enlisted to pay all my student loans off and to get the rest of my college education paid for.

Why did you choose Simpson?

I chose Simpson because of the small class sizes, academic rigor, and the softball program. I also like how friendly and helpful everyone at Simpson is; both the staff and student population.

Any advice for those who are considering serving?

It has its challenges, but it makes you a stronger person both physically and mentally. The Army also has tons of educational and health benefits that most people don’t know about. It’s worth looking into if you’re physically fit and motivated to be a part of something bigger than yourself.

Simpson College thanks Kasiah for her service!
