Winn’s Pizza and Steakhouse: family-friendly service and a little bit of everything
April 12, 2018
There is only one place in Indianola where you can satisfy your homemade pizza fix, request top sirloin with a side of egg rolls and even place an order of sweet baklava for dessert.
Winn’s Pizza and Steakhouse has been a staple of the Indianola square for nearly 15 years, serving all of the above and more.
The locally owned family restaurant at 122 West Ashland Ave is open seven days a week, and is the perfect place for quick carry-out or a sit-down meal with friends.
Owner Winn has been in the restaurant business for almost 30 years and opened his own restaurant in Indianola because he enjoys the location.
“I worked in a restaurant for 14 years before I went on my own,” Winn said. “It was the town and the people [of Indianola] that brought me here.”
The restaurant also serves daily specials of lasagna, ground sirloin, baby back ribs, top sirloin, prime rib, catfish and chicken fried steak which come with choice of potato or rice and Winn’s signature salad bar.
But it is not only for the food that Simpson students should visit “We’re friendly people,” Winn said.
On Yelp, Winn’s received an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars with reviewers highlighting the “eclectic menu,” “impressively good service” and the “cute and casual atmosphere.”
Winn’s was recently voted the 2017 Des Moines Register Metro’s Best family-owned Restaurant and best pizza restaurant. In addition to their Indianola location, they also have a restaurant in Norwalk. The Indianola location features a party room for holding club and other organization events.
According to a quote on the restaurant’s website, Winn’s was also a known favorite of President Barack Obama’s Iowa campaign staff, “So a guy walks in and eats and he says great food, great service, ‘Where are you from?’ Indiana, my friend from the Obama Campaign told me that if I am ever in Iowa go to Winn’s Pizza and Steakhouse!”
For Winn, stories like that are his favorite part of working in the industry.
“Seeing the people, meeting the people, that is my favorite part,” Winn said.
