Wrestlers set to face tough competition in IIAC duals

by Carrie LaGree

The Simpson wrestling team faces off against four tough opponents on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Cowles Fieldhouse will host the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Duals this year. The IIAC is perhaps the nation’s strongest conference, with seven of its 10 teams ranked in the top 25 of the adidas/BRUTE Division III Coaches Poll.

The teams traveling to the IIAC Duals at Simpson are #8 Loras, #11 Buena Vista, #13 Luther and #21 Coe. Simpson remained #16 in the Coaches Poll after placing third at the Cornell Matman Invitational January 18-19.

Simpson boasts only one individually ranked wrestler, however, junior Brannon Hilton is eighth in the 174-pound weight class. Hilton carries a 12-3 record this season. He has one pin.

Freshman Clint Manny ended his 16 match-winning streak at the Cornell Matman Invitational. Manny was four matches from tying Nick Ackerman’s school record of 20 consecutive wins. Senior Justin Song won an individual title at the Matman Invitational after going 4-0 at the tournament.

Simpson begins the IIAC Duals meet with a 9 a.m. dual against Buena Vista. At 10:30 a.m., Simpson faces off against Luther. Simpson wrestles Loras at 1:30 p.m. The meet concludes with Simpson against Coe at 3 p.m.

Simpson faced Coe last weekend at the Mat-Man Invitational and lost by one point.
