With last week’s production of “The Vagina Monologues,” immediate attention was given to women’s issues and women’s lives, the focus of Women’s History Month. The event raised over $6,500 for the Warren County Domestic Abuse Coalition and the cause to stop violence against women.

The funds raised and the number of attendees at “The Vagina Monologues” are both an impressive results from a college and community of our size. It is proof that the community cares about women’s issues. It is the little steps such as these that will bring women toward the larger, overall goal s of equality and respect that every human being deserves.

The interest peaked by “The Vagina Monologues” must not die down. Such passion and strength will only grow with continual support from both men and women alike. The buzz that was created on campus was unlike that surrounding most other big events. The fact that students, faculty, staff and administration recognize the importance of the issue is a testimony to our college community as it works to improve the well-being and quality of life for all of its members.

Clearly, women’s issues are important in our community and hopefully other events scheduled in celebration of Women’s History Month will receive the same attention and support as last week’s campus production.Continuous support in the curriculum is order for individuals to recognize the importance of these issues and see how the world is viewed from the minority perspective. Cornerstone 6 has received continuous attention from the college. Introduction to Women’s Studies went from a May Term course to a regular, semester-long course, allowing more students to pursue the Women’s Studies minor.

Over the course of the month of March, do not lose sight of the messages of “The Vagina Monologues” or the purpose for which it was written.
