Do you ever get bored of playing flippy cup in your dorm room, decide to wander around campus, and eventually stumble upon midnight breakfast?

Well, if Pfeiffer isn’t floating your boat as much as it used to, let us suggest an alternative. This column is designed to let you know what’s up; concerts, movie premiers, CD releases, sporting events and much, much more.

We promise you that “The Beat” will keep you in the know so you never have to settle for a meritocre Friday night again.Enough with the chit chat, let’s cut to the good stuff. This is what you can expect from The Beat.

Road Trip – Need to ditch town for a couple of days? No problem. We’ll tell you where the fun is going on out of town so you can flake for a few.

Check It – Songs you should check out, upcoming artists, the concert calendar, movie premieres, comedians, and CD releases can be found here.

The Dish – We’re letting you in on the drink specials, as well as new clubs and restaurants, in the Des Moines area. Hear of a new bar coming to town? You can find out more about it here.

Flashback – “Sweet Home Alabama”, “Hotel California”, and “Detroit Rock City” – These songs have more in common than you know. Each Flashback will be chock full of facts about one of your favorite oldies artists. For This Week…

Road Trip – Saturday, Sept. 13, the Iowa Hawkeyes take on the Iowa State Cyclones at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. The game starts at 11 a.m. so you should have plenty of time for a little pre-game extravaganza.

Check It – Saturday, Sept. 13, for the 21-and-over crowd, Downtown People’s Court presents a Johnny Cash tribute featuring The Josh Davis Band, Randy Burk and the Prisoners and the Gougers. The show starts at 9 p.m. and you can check it out for only $8.00.

Wednesday, Sept. 17, the Val Air Ballroom presents Bullet For My Valentine featuring special guests Bleeding Through and Blacktide. Tickets are $22.50. Doors open at 6:30 pm with the show starting at 7:30 pm.

The Dish – Sunday. Sept. 14,$1.50 and $2.99 margaritas at Los Cabos located on Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines.

Monday, Sept. 15, penny beers, $1 bottles and $1 wells at Komodo Klub located on 3rd Street in the Court Avenue District in Downtown Des Moines.

Flashback – Need some music you can do your homework to? If you’re looking for Van Morrison meets Led Zeppelin then we’ve got the guy! Check out Jeff Buckley, a 90’s rock artist and son of songwriter Tim Buckley.

Straight out of Orange County, California, Buckley took the stage at a young age. Some of Buckley’s hits include “Last Goodbye,” “Grace,” and “Mojo Pin.” His albums include “Grace,” “Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk,” & “Live At L’Olympia.”
