With snow on the ground at the start of the game, Simpson (2-4, 1-3 IIAC) was unable to stop eighth-ranked Central’s offensive attack and fell 56-24. Central (6-0, 4-0 IIAC) jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. The Storm were never able to pose a serious threat as the Dutch handed Simpson a Homecoming loss at Buxton Stadium Saturday. Led by senior running back David Zachary, who rushed 15 times for 155 yards and four touchdowns, Central dominated on the ground. They averaged 7.8 yards per carry for 289 yards and a total of seven rushing touchdowns. Entering the game, Central was ranked No. 1 in the conference in rushing offense, averaging 266.2 yards per game. The Dutch scored on quick drives that featured long runs and accurate passes. They were effective through the air as two quarterbacks for Central completed 9 of 15 passes for 120 yards and a score. Sophomore starter Nate Snead completed all five of his passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. Simpson attempted to go to the air early against the conference’s top-ranked rushing defense. On the first play of the game, senior Simpson quarterback Tyson Unkrich connected with senior wide receiver Legrand Bien-Aime for a 48-yard pass. Unfortunately, the next play resulted in a Central interception in the end zone. On the ensuing possession, Central drove the ball 80 yards for the 7-0 lead. That would be a sign of things to come. Central would lead 21-3 after the first quarter and never trail in the game. Despite the score, Simpson led in numerous statistical categories. The Storm out-gained Central 466-409 in total yardage and led in time of possession 34:41 to 25:19. However, four turnovers, which included three interceptions and a lost fumble, contributed significantly to the loss. Junior running back Matt Claassen gained 117 yards on the ground on 24 carries and a touchdown. Unkrich completed 16 passes on 36 attempts for 210 yards and two late scores to freshman wide receiver Taylor Rogers. Rogers gained 63 yards on four catches and Bien-Aime had five catches for 85 yards. The Storm look to get back on track next Saturday when they host conference opponent Dubuque at 4 p.m.
