Taking extra food costs students in the long run

Everyone has seen students who take food and dishes out of Pfeiffer Dining Hall, when there are signs clearly posted not to do so.

The policy at Pfeiffer, when it comes to the food, is students can eat as much as they want while they are in the building. Students who take a cookie or piece of fruit occasionally are generally over looked because it is so minor.

Pfeiffer’s general manger, Blair Stairs, said that theft is hard to catch in Pfeiffer because of its multiple exits.

“We do catch people on occasion,” Stairs said. “For every (student) that we catch, however, probably 10 more are doing it. We have many exits so it is hard to monitor (theft).”

Stairs also mentioned the affect that taking extra food and dishes has on meal-plan costs.

“Every little bit is going to increased food costs,” Stairs said. “(Meal plans) are going to increase if people take out glasses and that, because eventually, I am going to have to replace that. So it would eventually have an impact on food costs.”

According to past Simpson student catalogs, between the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years all meal plans increased an average of $148. Those meal plan prices were increased again between the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years by an average of $121.25. In issues pertaining to stealing in Pfeiffer, Cameron Scott, sophomore Kresge community adviser, said his residents and other students have the ability to make their own choices.

“We are all grown here,” Scott said. “We are all adults, and we can make our own decisions. Someone can make their own decision to steal or not to steal.”

Students were more than happy to tell stories of what they witnessed being taken out of Pfeiffer. Everything from cups and plates to whole jugs of milk and full trays of desserts have left Pfeiffer with people who have sticky hands.

Junior, Raelene Main, recalled a student taking a cup from Pfeiffer. “They just filled up their cup and walked out with it,” Main said.Main finds that taking dishes goes beyond what is acceptable to take out of Pfeiffer.

“The dishes are kind of ridiculous, but the bananas are OK,” Main said. “I feel like if it’s fruit (students are) going to eat it which is not a bad thing, but I don’t think they should be taking dishes.”

Junior, Blake Shultice, has pretty much seen everything being taken out of Pfeiffer.

“I’ve seen people take a whole loaf of bread and fill up an empty milk jug with milk,” Shultice said. “I’ve even seen someone take a dessert tray, a whole dessert tray full of dessert.”

Shultice said some people over step their bounds a bit.

“It’s hard to know where to draw the line,” Shultice said. “Like a banana or apple, I know for some people that’s too much, but I think that’s kind of minor. When you take a whole tray of desserts it’s hurting everyone because of course Pfeiffer is going to raise its prices.”
