Storm stave off Luther comeback to win in five sets

INDIANOLA, Iowa – After six days to dwell on their conference opening loss to Wartburg, Storm Volleyball responded with a dramatic five-set victory over Luther College Tuesday.

Tabitha Blaser lead the Storm (6-6, 1-1) with 13 kills and Katie Kieffer piled on 43 assists as Simpson ousted the Norse (9-6, 1-1), (26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 14-16).

Torey Buenger chipped in with 12 kills of her own, leading the Storm with 17 points. Elisa Wildy quietly had herself a nice match with 11.5 points.

Simpson started off the night eking out a 26-24 set one victory, followed up by a convincing 25-18 second set win.

Luther didn’t cower under the two set deficit, as they stormed back with 13 third set kills, and 17 in set four to power themselves to a fifth set.

Simpson had a difficult time containing Senior, McKinzy Lohberger, who finished with 22 kills and a robust, 24.5 points for the Norse.

The momentum shifted when the Storm needed it most, as Simpson rallied to hit .500 in the final set, while Luther could only muster a .250 mark. A few Norse errors and some timely kills brought Simpson the win at the wire, coming away with a 16-14 5th set win.

Tuesday’s victory was Simpson’s first win at home on the season, and their fifth time at .500.

Storm Volleyball will enter into their third weekend tournament on Friday as they play in the NACC/IACC Crossover Tournament held in Milwaukee, Wis.

Play will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Wisconsin Lutheran, and then again at 5 p.m. as they take on Marian University (Wis.).
