As the spring semester comes to an end, so does the Simpson College golf team’s season. The team has had strong individual and team performances this year, and both teams are headed into their final competitions.
Joann Martin, a senior and fourth year member of the women’s golf team, finished her final season strong.
“This spring season has gone well for me,” Martin said, “Over the winter, we had a few tweaks to my swing that have worked out in my favor.”
The women’s golf team has had a very successful spring season, as they have finished with three first-place wins and one third-place finish. Several individuals have found their own successes, including junior Kaylin Long, who has finished in the top five multiple times this season.
The women’s golf team finished their spring season on April 17 in Waterloo at the Gates Memorial Golf Course. The team was the tournament champion, finishing with 330. Sophomore Addison Brink led the team, finishing with a 79, followed by Martin with an 82.
Simpson junior, Andrew Princehouse, has been golfing since he was 7 years old, and joined the Simpson golf team during his first-year. Looking back at his golf year, he has recognized some challenges that he refers to as a “junior slump.” He recognizes the mental toughness of the sport and having to battle through challenging rounds and barriers.
“I’m hopeful after another summer of practicing, next season I will start scoring again where I am capable.”
The men’s team had a 36-hole tournament in Illinois on April 20, followed by a conference meet at Glen Oaks Country Club at the end of the month.
“We are coming up on conference and I think we will put out a good showing,” Princehouse said.
Martin and Princehouse both point to their team’s cultures and the friendships they have built as the most meaningful parts of their experience. Martin described the group as “close-knit,” appreciating the strong connections amongst her teammates.
Princehouse added that the most rewarding aspect has been being a part of something bigger than himself. Princehouse also recognized that being on the team gives him the opportunity to play courses he wouldn’t normally get to play.
As their seasons come to an end, the seniors look to close their collegiate golf careers on a high note, while the underclassmen keep looking for ways to build their team up and continue to progress throughout their time on the team.
