In 2025, the Simpson College softball team finished the season with a 34-9 record and captured the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) regular season championship for the first time since 2010.
Although the Storm fell short in the A-R-C tournament, their dominance in the regular season had already secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III regional tournament. This was the program’s first NCAA regional appearance since 2016.
This year, the Simpson softball team is returning two All-Americans.
Senior Ashlyn Steen is a two time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NCFA) winner, and third team All-American. She hit a 479 batting average while also stealing 28 bases throughout the season.
Senior Megan Heidelbauer is a one time NFCA winner, and second team All-American. She also acquired the 2025 Rawlings Gold Glove and had a batting average of 497 while also hitting 15 home runs.
Head Coach Brent Matthias was named as American Rivers Conference Coach of the Year.
With the success from last year, program expectations have changed.
“We bring the experience of knowing what it takes to be a high level competitive team,” Matthias said.
After competing deep into the postseason, the Simpson softball team understands the consistency required to win.
Matthias believes these expectations are positive, but a challenge at the same time. It brings recognition to the college, alumni, families and friends.
“If we believe what we read instead of working, sometimes you can become lackadaisical,” Matthias said.
Heidelbauer understands the pressure of what comes with the expectations. Coming off a successful season and numerous awards, she knows other teams will be more prepared for her.
“Pressure is a privilege,” Heidelbauer said. “I worked myself into this position.”
With opponents having this anticipation, her approach remains steady.
“Just play my game, not trying to do too much, and do the small things so we as a team get the win,” she said.
Heidelbauer is confident with the Storm’s lineup this upcoming season.
“Overall we look super consistent. I don’t see a weak spot in the lineup,” she said. “It’s one through nine. Everyone can come through with a big hit.”
This balance will make Simpson very strong offensively.
Senior pitcher Emma LaFave is excited about the depth returning to the circle this season.
“I’m excited to have six girls returning from last year and for our new freshmen,” LaFave said. “We’ve been working really hard in the offseason, so I’m excited for what the season brings for us.”
The Simpson Storm have their opening game Feb. 28 against nationally ranked Illinois Wesleyan University. This game will be a test to start the season.
“It’s a hard way to start the year, but it’s exciting,” Heidelbauer said. “We’ve got to hit the ground running.”
