After years of guiding students through college, Laura Glasgow is bringing her experience and energy to Simpson College as the new assistant director of residence life.
Glasgow attended college at Eastern Washington University, where she was a community advisor (CA) for three years. She then went to graduate school for higher education at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida.
During her time at West Florida, Glasgow was a graduate hall director, where she found joy in working with students and residence life.
“I enjoy working in ResLife because we get to work with students in every aspect of their life, so the best day, the worst day, and everything in between,” Glasgow said.
Before Simpson, Glasgow served as the assistant director of residence life at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. For two of her years there, Lucas Herb-Mullin, Simpson’s Director of Residence Life, was her supervisor for two years while she was at Texas A&M.
“The qualities that I was looking for were someone who wasn’t afraid to jump in and get things going,” Herb-Mullin said. “She’s very attentive to detail and structure, which we need structure.”
Glasgow said it was difficult to connect with students at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since it is a much larger school than Simpson. She wanted a position where she could be more involved with students, which she found at Simpson.
“I really appreciated Simpson’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment, which was a far stretch from the institution and state I was coming from,” Glasgow said.
The small campus feel and inclusive environment gave Glasgow everything she needed.
“The interviews were more like chats with friends, and my on-campus interview was so fun, I knew this was going to be a great fit for me,” said Glasgow.
When Glasgow first stepped onto campus, she quickly realized how busy Simpson students are. She noticed most students are involved in extracurricular activities like sports work studies, or organizations.
“Students here are very busy, but it seems to work,” Glasgow said. “If students weren’t busy, I don’t think that would work.”
Glasgow has many goals for the school as the new Assistant Director of Residence Life.. She wanted to start by getting to know the students, faculty and staff.
She also wanted to spend intentional time going to sporting events, walking around campus and meeting new people.
Glasgow described herself as a process-driven person who loves working with struggling students, and enjoys having fun while also getting the job done. Herb-Mullin believed she fit her role super well.
“I really enjoy her advocacy for students, like everything she does, she thinks about how it’s going to affect our students and CA’s,” Herb-Mullin said.
Glasgow is ready to provide the same support and advocacy by helping students thrive on campus. Even in her short time here, she has felt the energy and warmth the Simpson community brings.
