Storm Go One and One in Baseball Doubleheader
The Storm hosted a doubleheader against Upper Iowa on Mar. 27.The Storm was defeated 9-8 in eight innings in the first game.Junior Chris Beall went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
In the nightcap, the Storm defeated the Peacocks, 10-2. JuniorCasey Graham tossed a complete game allowing only six hits on thenight. Junior Dan Rieck went 4-for-4 with a home run and seniorGrant Fjetland went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Storm currently stand at 7-5.
Men’s Tennis Defeat Dubuque, Fall to Central and Grinnell
The Storm hosted Central on Mar. 23 and fell to the Dutch by thescore of 6-1. The lone victory came from junior Luc Mbenoun insingles play. Senior Sam Skalland and junior Andrew Mitchellcharted the only doubles victory.
On Mar. 25, the Storm fell to Grinnell, 6-1. Mbenoun was theonly winner of the day in singles play. Senior David Venables andjunior Cory Veen won in doubles.
The Storm came away victorious in a 4-3 match against Dubuque onMar. 27. Singles winners were Veen, Venables, freshman PatrickCarlson and freshman Marcus Bowersox. The pair of Venables andBowersox won in doubles.
The Storm men’s tennis team stands at 8-5 overall and 5-2 in theIowa Conference.
Zeller and Martin lead Men’s Golf at Central Classic
The Simpson men’s golf team traveled to the Central Classic onMarch 26-27. The Storm had two teams entered in the tournament withthe No. 1 team placing in a tie for seventh and the No. 2 teamfinishing 14th.
Senior Matt Zeller and junior Mike Martin led the team with ascore of 156, which was a tie for 13th individually. Zeller shot 75and 81 for the two day tournament while Martin shot 82 and 74.
For the No. 2 squad, sophomore J.J. Thorius led with an 86 and82, and tied for 45th.
Men’s Track Opens Season with Fourth Place Finish
The Storm opened the 2004 outdoor season with a fourth placefinish at the Monmouth Invitational.
Sophomore Reid Leichty place second in the 400m while sophomoreRyan Grinstead was also second in the javelin. Junior Ross Parkerplaced second in the discus and third in the shot put.
Wendt Wins 1500m for Women’s Track Opener
The Simpson women’s track team opened the outdoor season with afourth place finish at the Monmouth Invitational.
Sophomore Jen Wendt was the long winner for the Storm, placingfirst in the 1500m. Junior Sarah Merritt placed second in the 100hurdles.
