How to stop the Dutch

Simpson’s football team will have one mission in mind Saturday as it takes the field for its season-ending game against Central – stopping the Dutch.

Simpson head coach Jim Glogowski says he’s expecting a high-intensity game as the Storm takes its four-game winning streak into the 1 p.m. contest at Buxton Stadium. Simpson is 5-2 in the conference and 5-4 overall as it heads into the game.

“They have a great quarterback (in senior Nate Snead) who likes to run the ball and have a strong offensive line who will be rushing every chance they get,” Glogowski said, who’s brought Simpson back from a discouraging 0-3 start to the season.

The Simpson-Central rivalry is one of the biggest in the Iowa Conference. The Storm’s goals each year include a winning record, team recognition and beating Central.

But players say Simpson will need more than high intensity to beat Central, which is 5-2 in conference play and 6-3 overall.

Senior tight end Alex McCarty, who has caught 16 passes and scored one touchdown this season, says Simpson must executes its game plan right away to get momentum on the Storm’s side.

McCarty said hustle, hard play and desire will be the keys to victory on Saturday.

Meanwhile, sophomore running back Michael Chia says he sees this game as just another contest for Simpson.

“I see this week as nothing different other than it being a rivalry game,” Chia said, who averages 64.6 rushing yards per game and has scored two touchdowns this season.

Chia says he’s been following the same rituals this week and doing nothing out of the ordinary other than making himself better, working harder everyday, and trusting his teammates.

Players and coaches say working harder than the Dutch will require stopping their game plan.

The Simpson-Central rivalry is one of the biggest in the Iowa Conference. The Storm’s goals each year include a winning record, team recognition and beating Central.

McCarty and Chia see the Storm working that much harder to win their fifth game in a row – and finish 5-1 in its last six games.

“Trusting each other and having each other’s back is what needs to happen on Saturday,” Chia said.

McCarty says limiting mistakes with be a crucial part in the game on Saturday: “We can’t give Central free opportunities.”

The Storm is fired up about limiting Dutch opportunities and getting on the field to get the work done.

“The kids have worked hard all season, and I see this game as very emotional to the seniors – it will be their last game together,” Glogowski said.

Chia added that he wants the seniors to feel like they were part of the process and the start of a tradition.

“This is going to be a big game and an emotional game,” McCarty said.

Nothing feels as good as beating Central in the last game of the year, added Chia.
