January 23, 2013
The Women’s Basketball tea, faced Dubuque Saturday afternoon. As they looked to stay perfect in conference, beating the Spartans 75-66, despite being down until the late minutes.
The Storm came into the match with a record of 14-1; 4-0 in the conference. Dubuque, who has also had much success so far this season, came into the game with a record of 12-3; 2-2 in the conference.
The game was very competitive and exciting all the way around. When it seemed like the Storm were headed for another solid victory, tables turned and Dubuque ended up being in control of the game up until the last few minutes.
The game started out solely in favor of the Storm. The team was knocking down early three pointers and Senior Kate Nielsen came out of the gate on a torrid pace to help give the Strom a commanding 10 point lead. The game got very interesting though as Dubuque went on a run of their own to close the first half within five points of the Storm, down 35-30.
The Spartans clearly went into halftime with all the momentum on their side, and it would carry over into the second half as they started out on a 7-0 run to take the lead. At this point in the game, it looked like it was going to be a battle to the finish. The teams were trading baskets back and forth until Simpson finally started to pull ahead in the late minutes of the second half. Clutch baskets by seniors Nicole Crisp, Chelsie Rohrs and Kate Nielsen late in the game helped seal the deal for the Storm.
Winning 58-56. the Storm improve to 5-0 in conference.
