Storm earn first ‘W’ since ’12 against Wartburg in shutout style

WAVERLY, Iowa – It doesn’t look like Saturday’s 1-0 win for men’s soccer against Wartburg will be the last time the Storm face the Knights this season.

But the second time the Storm will likely face Wartburg (10-6-1, 3-3-0) in Indianola, as Marcus Varnum’s goal in the 27th minute combined by a shut down performance by Austin Schafer in goal pushed Simpson (8-8-2, 3-2-1) into sole possession of fourth place in the IIAC standings.

The Storm have one game remaining in the regular season slate but it comes against 5-11 Buena Vista, meaning if Simpson does as expected and win, will host fifth-seeded Wartburg in the first round of the IIAC Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Varnum scored his team-leading sixth goal from the lower left corner of the box on a helper from Garrett Pochop.

The Storm felt the sting of a wild, 4-3 loss to Wartburg last season, giving up 17 shots while only attempting 11 in 2014.

Roles were reversed on Saturday though as the Storm put up 20 shots to only 12 for Wartburg.

Schafer saved all six shots put on goal as he bumped his record up to 4-2 on the year.

Men’s soccer looks to close out the regular season on a four-game winning streak against Buena Vista on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Buxton Stadium for Senior Night.
