The Masters Tournament took place this past weekend, April 9-12. As always, this tournament lived up to the hype with lots of stories and lead changes. This year, however, it was rumored to be tough conditions, with the course firm and, as always, difficult greens and pin locations.
The opening round ended with a packed leaderboard, but two individuals separated themselves from the rest of the pack. Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns were tied at the top at 5 under par.
On Friday, McIlroy took control of the tournament in the second round, and at one point, McIlroy was leading by six shots. He was rumored to not have played in any tournaments in the past three weeks leading up to the Masters. Rather, he flew to Augusta National Golf Club during these three weeks to practice on the course in preparation for the tournament.
This gives McIlroy an advantage, and fans were not happy about this; however, by the end of the second round on Friday, many players remained in range, keeping the tournament competitive.
Saturday rolled around, and the tournament got interesting as the drama picked up. The conditions of this day made the course scoreable, and that stayed true throughout the round; however, McIlroy shot 1 over par and opened the door for others to close in.
Cameron Young took advantage of the good conditions and shot 7 under par to end the round and tied in the lead with McIlroy at 11 under par. Though, there was a great pack of golfers behind these two that would not back down. Shane Lowry, Justin Rose and Scottie Scheffler were all on the hunt in the third round to go for it all on Sunday.
All of those big names in golf are what made Sunday so interesting, and it made for a great battle for the green jacket.
Sunday came down to the last few holes, per usual. Scheffler had an amazing round, ending the tournament at 11 under par. This would earn him second place outright.
McIlroy went out and did exactly what he had to do, which was to maintain the lead all day. After executing perfectly, he won the Masters for the second year in a row.
With that, McIlroy has joined a few lists after this historic tournament. He has become one of four golfers who have won the Masters in back-to-back years. The list contains Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods and now McIlroy, a very pristine list of names in golf.
Overall, this tournament was one of the best of the year and, in my eyes, the best golf tournament I have ever watched.
