Roberts, Melton, Scott best performances at BVU Invite

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Buena Vista University hosted a bevy of schools at its invitational on Saturday, including Division I, II, II, NAIA and junior college schools.
No team results were recorded although individuals Jonathan Melton, Brett Roberts and DeVaughn Scott all finished in the top five in their weight classes.
Some of the schools that competed were Morningside, Graceland, Concordia (Neb.), Midland (Neb.), Iowa Central, Grand View, Central Missouri and Ellsworth Community College.
Top Simpson Performances
149 – Melton (3rd place) – The sophomore had an impressive showing, going 6-1 overall and 4-0 before falling to Max Thomsen by technical fall in the semifinals of 149.
Melton was bumped to the 3rd place bracket but rebounded to win two more matches, defeating Minnesota State’s Daniel Close 6-4 to take 3rd place.
184 – Roberts (2nd place) was just one match from winning the 184 bracket outright, going 4-1 overall, losing only to Grand View’s Michael Pixley in the title match by fall just 28 seconds into the match.
197 – Scott (4th place) went 4-2 overall and fell by a 4-2 decision in the 3rd place match to AJ McBroom.
Other Notable Simpson Performances
Jason Clark ran into a familiar opponent – although that opponent was also a teammate. Clark ultimately fell to Simpson’s Jake Mize in a 6-3 decision in the 3rd place bracket. Mize had a successful invite himself, finishing 6th while going 5-3 at 157.
Clark went 3-2 overall at 157.
At 165, Shane Swank went 3-2 before falling to Isaiah Patton by 8-2 decision.
Looking ahead
It will be Simpson’s turn next weekend as it hosts the Luther L. Hill Invitational at Cowles Fieldhouse. The wrestling kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12.
