President Simmons: Academic dean retires

by Alex Kirkpatrick, Digital Editor

Senior Vice President and Academic Dean Steve Griffith will retire at the end of the academic year, Simpson College President Jay Simmons said in an email Thursday.

Griffith started his tenure at Simpson in 2006 as vice president and academic dean. In 2009, he was appointed senior vice president and academic dean by then-President John Byrd.

“Over the next few months, please join me in thanking Dean Griffith for his manifold contributions to Simpson College,” Simmons wrote.

Among Griffith’s contributions, Simmons notes his role in overseeing the implementation of the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum, expanding faculty governance procedures, including a regular sabbatical program and more.

With Griffith’s departure, Simmons plans to meet with division chairs in identifying a successor by conducting a national search.

A meeting is scheduled for Feb. 8.

Members of the Simpson community are encouraged to share ideas or suggestions in the procedure.
