February 10, 2016
DECORAH, Iowa – The Simpson women went cold in the second half, falling to Iowa Conference leading Luther 71-59 and the Simpson men churned out a 64-61 win.
Women’s Game: Luther (17-5, 9-2) 91, Simpson 59 (13-9, 6-5)
Luther was the better team on Wednesday, using a 22-10 run to steal the lead for good late in the second quarter as it clinched the No. 1 seed in the Iowa Conference tournament.
Simpson led 22-16 after the first quarter before surrendering the lead for good at the 1:59 mark when Luther hit back-to-back 3-pointers to go ahead 31-30.
Somehow Luther worked around being outscored 30-6 in the paint, a margin created by a 19-point eight rebound night from Noreen Morrow.
The Norse relied on their three starting guards, all of which scored in double figures, led by Kylie Romeo’s 19.
Mackenzie Haupt had another solid game as well, scoring 16 points but she wasn’t backed up much elsewhere as Simpson shot a mere 32.3 percent in the second half.
The Storm start a two-game homestand on Saturday, Feb. 13 when they host Coe (13-9, 4-7). Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
Men’s Game: Simpson (14-8, 7-4) 64, Luther (5-17, 4-7) 61
Sam Amsbaugh scored a team-high 15 points, Dillon Gretzky added 14 and the Simpson men’s basketball team overcame an early nine-point deficit to break a nine-game losing streak at the Regents Center in Decorah.
Both teams were tied 35-35 at the break before Simpson created a small margin that it would maintain throughout the second half. Luther had a chance to tie the game with under 30 seconds to go but the game-tying layup attempt rolled off the rim.
Simpson will clinch a berth in the Iowa Conference Tournament pending a Buena Vista loss as Coe was taken down by Dubuque on Wednesday.
The Storm host the Kohawks at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 from Cowles Fieldhouse.
