Simpson Sports Weekend in Review | 4.8-4.10

Here’s a brief rundown on the results from the eight Simpson teams that were in action this weekend across Iowa and into Wisconsin.
Baseball DH @ University of Dubuque
Weekend Results: 2-2
W, 7-6
L, 5-2
W, 3-1
L, 11-9
Overall Record: Simpson 6-15, 3-7 (IIAC)
Both teams had to battle mid-30s temperatures, violent gusts of wind and snow flurries in Dubuque.
Gage Reis was a top performer for Simpson on the weekend. Reis had 6 RBI, a grand slam and threw a six-hit complete game to improve to 2-3 on the mound.
Austin Burlin improved his hitting streak to 25 games dating back to last year, belting his conference-leading sixth home run in the process.
Men’s Golf @ Wartburg Invitational
Results: T4th/8
The first round of the invitational was cancelled due to poor weather conditions and Simpson tied for fourth place with Waldorf College with a 311 over one round of play.
Trent Lindeman led Simpson, finishing T11th/48 with a 76 (+4).
Wartburg won its own invite with a 295, three strokes ahead of Kirkwood College.
Women’s Golf @ Mt. Mercy Spring Invite
Results: 5th/7 – 387 (+99)
Day two of the women’s golf invite at Mt. Mercy was cancelled due to rain. Kelsa Berkland led the Storm with an 11th place finish. Clarke University won with a 351.
No. 22 Softball DH vs. Dubuque
Results: 2-0
W, 7-2
W, 6-1
Overall Record: 23-6, 2-2 IIAC
Simpson backed up its recently received No. 22 national ranking with a two-game sweep of the University of Dubuque in Indianola on Saturday, Apr. 9.
Abbie Vanvleet improved to 10-2 on the season with a complete game effort in game one. Riley Fisher is now 11-1 in the circle after hurling a complete game three-hitter in game two.
Simpson out-hit Dubuque 20-9, getting three from Tori Haag who is now just three hits short of the career record at Simpson with 177.
Men’s Tennis @ Central College
Results: L, 7-2
Overall Record: 9-9, 0-2
Zach Kusick was in the midst of both of Simpson’s wins this weekend. Kusick won 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot in singles play.
Kusick and Peter Rietgraf combined to win doubles 8-1 for Simpson’s only other win.

The Simpson men’s track and field team took another step in an impressive season at the Cornell Invite on Saturday, while Sarah Galbraith and Rebecca Diemer led the women.
