While the buzz of the hiring of the new head football coach Matt Jeter stole the scene for Simpson sports this weekend, six teams were in competition for Simpson this weekend.

Here’s a quick run-down on their results.

Friday, Apr. 1

Softball continues to streak

The most successful team on campus right now kept rolling, winning 7-5 and 13-1 over the University of Wisconsin – Lacrosse to improve to 21-4 on the season.

Game 1: Simpson 7, UW-Lacrosse 5

WP: Abbie Vanvleet (9-1)

Game 2: Simpson 13, UW-Lacrosse 1

WP: Fisher (10-0)

Weather shortens men’s golf invite

The men’s golf team began the spring season with a t-15th/21 place finish at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational, competing for one day due to cancellations on day two.

Shaan Desai finished t-23rd to lead the Storm, shooting a 75.

Simpson tied with Central at 312.

Saturday, Apr. 2:

Women’s Tennis swept to start spring season

L, Wartburg 6, Simpson 3

L, Northwestern (Minn.) 9, Simpson 0

Kelli Ehrhardt, Kelli Greiner and Liz Nimmo earned Simpson’s only three wins on the day, all coming in singles.

Men’s & Women’s Track and Field

Track was cancelled at the Central Invite on Saturday.

Last Minute Invite – Coe

Men – 2nd/8

Women – 7th/8

Simpson won six events at the last minute invite at Coe. The men won five followed by one from the women, coming from Breanna Gaster who won the steeplechase.

Next up is the Cornell Invite on Saturday, Apr. 9 in Mt. Vernon.

Men’s Tennis loses a pair 8-1 matches

L, Wartburg 8, Simpson 1

L, Northwestern (Minn.) 8, Simpson 1

The Storm men suffered the same fate as the women, falling twice on a wild and windy day. Zach Nelson and Zach Kusick both won singles matches at the lone players to earn points for Simpson.

Sunday, Apr. 3:

Baseball out-slugged by Wartburg, turn 5-6-3-2 triple play

Wartburg scored 21 runs to defeat Simpson 13-2 and 8-6 in the home-opening doubleheader.

Game 1: Wartburg 13, Simpson 2

LP: Jalen Sickles (0-1)

HR: Austin Burlin (5)

Wartburg’s Ryan Kemp hit two home runs, one that was wind aided, and the Knights put together 16 hits in their conference opener.

Austin Burlin added another home run to his total and his third in two games.

Game 2: Wartburg 8, Simpson 6

LP: Brock Borgeson (2-2)

Bud Smith: 1-3, 2 RBI

Gage Reis: 3-4

Borgeson was hit around for 14 hits and 8ER in 8.0IP. The Knights scored in five different innings and five players had multi-hit games.

Women’s Golf last at Mike Fluff Invite, William Penn

The Simpson women’s golf team took last at the Mike Fluff Invite hosted by William Penn. They did not compete in day two of the invite.
