Men’s tennis sweeps Buena Vista, wins at Midland Lutheran
Simpson won a decisive victory against Buena Vista 7-0 lastFriday in Storm Lake. Winning in singles for the Storm were juniorLuc Mbenoun (No. 1), senior Sam Skalland (No. 2), senior GarretPiklapp (No. 3), junior Andrew Merrill (No. 4), junior Corey Veen(No. 5) and junior David Venables (No. 6). Posting doublesvictories for the Storm were Mbenoun and Piklapp (No. 1), Skallandand Merrill (No. 2) and Veen and Venables (No. 3). Simpson recordedvictory number two when they defeated Midland Lutheran 6-1 lastSaturday in Fremont, Neb. Skalland (No. 2), Piklapp (No. 3),Merrill (No. 4), Veen (No. 5), and Venables (No. 6) were victoriousin singles. Skalland and Merrill (No. 2) and Veen and Venables (No.3) all recorded victories in doubles.
Men’s Track Finishes Seventh
Simpson finished seventh with a score of 37 at the IowaConference Indoor Championships last weekend in Mt. Vernon. JuniorRoss Parker finished second in the shot put with a school recordtoss of 52-10 and sophomore Reid Leichty posted a season best timeof 1:59.57 finishing third in the 800-meter.
Wendt, Fenneman Lead Women’s Track
The Lady Storm left the Iowa Conference Indoor Championshipswith 22 points and a seventh place finish.
Sophomore Jen Wendt placed third in the 3000m in a time of10:38.96 and sophomore Kathryn Fenneman finished ninth in the polevault but broke her own school record with a leap of8-0’12.
Men’s Basketball Falls Short on the Road
Third ranked Simpson advanced past #6 Cornell College 80-70 inthe quarterfinals of the Iowa Conference Men’s BasketballTournament Tuesday Feb. 24 in Indianola. Freshman Jason Burkhardtled the team with 21 points on 8-11 shooting. Senior Dirk Walkerscored 11 points and tied Chris Perrin’s (1993-96) school recordfor career assists with 443.
Second ranked Wartburg defeated Simpson 85-72 in the semifinalsof the IIAC Tournament last Friday in Waverly. Burkhardt led theStorm with 15 points. Senior Jason Snyder scored 12 and led theteam with seven rebounds while freshman Jason Soppe posted 10points and five rebounds.
Women’s Basketball Splits IA Conference Tournament
#2 Simpson defeated #7 Central 64-54 in the quarterfinals of theIowa Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament Tuesday Feb. 24 inIndianola.
Senior Meghan Kelso led the Storm with a career high 21 points.Senior Amanda Pilcher added 14 points and grabbed ninerebounds.
Third ranked Wartburg defeated Simpson 71-51 in the IACCsemifinals last Friday in Indianola. This is the first time sincethe IACC Tournament was established in 1999 that the Storm lost ina game other than the finals of the meet. Pilcher led the Stormwith a game high 21 points and seven rebounds while junior AshleyBogaards added 10.
