She stood at the half-court line of the Simpson basketball court as the fans watched.
She took a breath, shot the ball – and won an Xbox.
Sophomore Jessica Martin made the half-court shot at a recent basketball game. Several people before her attempted and missed, but Martin sank the shot easily.
“I was a little intimidated because there were a lot of people watching,” Martin said.
Martin was surprised to have her name drawn at all. She thought she put her name in a drawing to win an Xbox, she didn’t realize she’d have to make a half-court shot to win that Xbox.
According to Martin, she doesn’t usually win drawings. She was even more surprised to make the shot.
“I really didn’t think I would make it,” Martin said. “I’ve probably made about a dozen half-court shots in my life, but this is the only one that counted for much.”
Martin played basketball in high school and for a short time at Simpson, but is currently a member of the Simpson volleyball team. During high-school basketball Martin worked on half-court shots, but she doesn’t think that practice helped her make the Xbox-winning basket.
“It’s all luck,” Martin said. “I’m sure if they would have had me shoot a three-point shot I would have missed.”
Martin stays busy playing volleyball for the Storm, but she’s also the house chairman for Kappa Kappa Gamma. She’s been borrowing Xbox games from her sorority sisters until she buys some of her own.
