The Core Alcohol and Drug survey shows that Simpson has a higher than average occurrence of binge drinking. It’s really not telling us anything we don’t already know.
Anyone going out on a Saturday night knows that drinking is a major occurrence on Simpson’s campus. One of the major reasons for this, however, is not that students go out with the intention of getting “wasted” every night, but that there are simply not enough alternative options.
What was surprising from the survey, however, was the high rate of drunk driving. Students attending a college like Simpson should also be smart enough to know better.
One option Simpson could put in place to help combat drunk driving is a shuttle system back and forth from the bars every night. The system would cut down on both drunk driving and public intoxication citations. Heck, the designated drivers could even get it as a work study.
