Between studying abroad, participating in Greek life, working as an undergraduate assistant in the Business Office, being a member of CASA, serving on SGA, and most recently becoming President of Panhellenic Council, could Simpson sophomore Katie Elder take on much more? She believes she could.

Elder came to Simpson last year from Aurora, Neb., after falling in love with the “liberal arts experience” Simpson offers. From the moment she stepped on campus she began to make a name for herself here, which is one of the reasons she decided to join SGA.

Student Body President Macy Koch is extremely thankful to have Elder’s positive attitude and dedication as a part of SGA.

“I love having Katie on the senate,” Koch said. “She is one of the people that I trust the most, and I know with no hesitations that if I assign something to Katie that it will get done and she won’t complain.”

Her role as a sophomore senator on SGA is only one of many places where Elder exceeds expectations though. Accounts Receivable Director Sherri Aldridge, Elder’s boss in the Business Office, used words like “hard-working, courteous, diligent, and respectful” to describe Elder.

“[Elder] is far above and beyond her years in her skills in the office,” Aldridge said. “She is a super sweet kid and I love having her in [the Business Office].”

Elder also made the decision to join the Greek community last year, pledging as a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

“I love being part of my sorority because I get to know a lot of girls,” Elder said. “But in Greek life you’re part of something bigger than just your house. You have all of the other fraternities and sororities, and you do a lot with them.”

Elder took on another leadership role there as well: President of Panhellenic Council. Panhellenic Council is made up of representatives from each sorority and works towards improving unity between the houses, as well as the overall success of the sororities. Lindsey Sheeder is the Greek Advisor for the Panhellenic Council and was glad Elder was elected president.

“I was excited both for Katie and for our Greek community,” Sheeder said. “She is a strong and experienced leader on Panhellenic and has some great ideas on how to help move the [Greek] community in a positive direction.”
