Women’s Soccer is ‘Simpson Strong’

New T-shirt opportunities seem to be filling up students’ e-mails, but the women’s soccer team has a t-shirt for sale that is not only about a cool design or catchy slogan but is also for a good cause.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jess Toyne designed the T-shirt.

“All the profits from the shirts will be split in half, with half going towards the girls’ soccer team and the other half going towards Liver Cancer research.” Toyne said. “There were already two breast cancer awareness shirts being done so we wanted something different.”

Last Spring, Katherine Bird, a junior on the soccer team from Iowa City, lost her father after a battle with liver cancer. Since then the soccer team has become supportive and helped her with her loss.

“It was a nice that I had a good support system in the soccer team, from team members going to the visitation and now with the t-shirts.” Bird said.

Being the head coach doesn’t allow much time for Ryan Sander to worry about the shirts, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t see the benefits.

“I think it helps connect the girls on and off the field,” Sander said. “Communication is huge for our team and the more communication we get on the field the better.”

The second idea for making the shirts came from the soccer team as a way to fundraise money for the dwindling soccer fund.

“The soccer team has taken trips in the past and that have been fun so hopefully we will get to do that again,” Bird said.

Toyne said there could be other benefits as well.

“Not only would it be fun to go on a trip it also works as a way for recruits to be more interested if we take a trip,” Toyne said.

Extra T-shirts will be ordered for members of the Simpson community who missed the original order. Shirts can be picked up during the home soccer game on Oct. 30 against Wartburg College. For more information contact Jess Toyne.
