Regardless of a rough start to the spring season, the Simpson College golf team continues to work hard and keep a positive attitude.
Coach Jason Marvelli feels that things could have been better as a team but is still proud of how they keep working hard and competing.
“We haven’t played as well as I would like, but we still have had some good performances this spring season,” Marvelli said. “We played real well at Buena Vista and in terms of conference play it’s still early and there’s plenty of time to compete.”
Senior Matt Spaulding has a similar view on the season. This is his fourth year at Simpson playing golf.
“This spring our first couple of tournaments weren’t quite as good as would wanted,” Spaulding said. “Every meet we have being working hard at finishing out our rounds, and it has been paying off lately. We had a solid finish at the Buena Vista Invitational which gave us a momentum boost into the first weekend of the conference tournament.”
Senior James Montgomery also feels the team has progressed nicely from tournament to tournament and is in a good spot in terms of conference play.
“The scores don’t always show it, but I think that our team is easily one of the top-3 in the conference when we play like we should,” Montgomery said. “This year we have played really close with most of the top teams, and we always have potential to be right there with the best teams in the conference.”
Marvelli believes that the team can still finish strong.
“I really do believe we have what it takes to finish as high as third in the Iowa conference,” Marvelli said.
Spaulding also believes the Storm are in prime position though to make a run when the rest of conference play begins.
“I believe our team is built for a solid finish in the Conference tournament,” Spaulding said. “We played the first 36 holes this weekend (16th and 17th) at Lake Creek Country Club with BVU hosting and then we travel to Finkbine in Iowa City the 29th and 30th. Right now we are in fifth place but only nine strokes back from Loras who is in second.”
