The Outside Scoop is ‘to die for’

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>The Outside Scoop has the

inside scoop on the key to delicious, homemade ice

cream just a short walk from campus.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>Joe Doering is not a typical

22-year-old college student; he’s an entrepreneur. He is the owner

and chief operator of The Outside Scoop located on North Jefferson

Way.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>Joe Doering once attended

Simpson for a short period of time.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>“(I was) in pursuit of

stardom as an opera singer,” Joe Doering said.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>He then switched gears and

decided to go to Northwestern in Illinois where he is now earning

his degree in biochemistry.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>What makes a young college

student who is studying biochemistry want to open an ice cream

shop?

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>“The primary (driving force)

for my founding of The Outside Scoop was the fact I am an

ice-cream-aholic,” Joe Doering said. “I typically find it difficult

to survive on anything less than three servings of ice cream a

day.”

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>His mother, Jean Doering,

fully supports that statement.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>“Since he was born, he loved

ice cream,” Jean Doering said.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>Like many new businesses, Joe

Doering faced a few obstacles along the way. The city of Indianola

ended up banning the trailer he was previously selling ice cream

from. Now the business is up and running in a nice, little shop

with a classic and cozy feel to it.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>The Outside Scoop stands

apart from other ice cream parlors because they make their ice

cream from scratch.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>“I emphasize ‘from scratch’

because many ice cream shops claim to offer a homemade product, but

in reality they use an ice cream mix,” Joe Doering said. “This is

comparable to your mom baking a batch of boxed, Betty Crocker

brownies and telling your father they are homemade.”

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>Soft serve ice cream is great

and all, but there is something about homemade hard-dip ice cream,

it’s almost a comfort food, reminding us of home and of our mothers

and grandmothers.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>“The Outside Scoop is genuine

when we refer to our product as homemade,” Joe Doering said. “We

whisk up small, two gallon batches of super-premium ice cream right

at our shop. We use natural ingredients including the freshest milk

from Anderson Erickson, pure cane sugar, pure extracts, and real

fruit. We let the liquid ingredients emulsify overnight prior to

churning and freezing, which yields a deliciously rich, smooth

product, that, unlike ice cream from your grocer or typical ice

cream shop, is not composed of exorbitant amounts of air or

unnatural stabilizers.”

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>Not only is the ice cream

homemade and absolutely delicious, it’s a lot for a good

price.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>“The density of our product

translates to more bang for the buck,” Joe Doering said.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>Like any ice cream lover you

are probably asking yourself, how many flavors do they have? Well,

they have plenty.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>“We typically offer 20

flavors from the traditional vanilla, chocolate, strawberry to the

whacky chocolate covered pretzel, blueberry lemonade (and) sweet

corn,” Doering said.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>The décor of The Outside

Scoop is very classic, comfortable and quirky. Enjoy a cup of

caramel apple ice cream while sitting at a round table with old

pictures of ice cream shops, and staring at fun paint on the walls

that looks like melted ice cream.

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>“Where else can you find

melting ice cream on the walls, sit on the same bench as 20 other

people, play a game of monopoly on a table covered in vintage ice

cream photos and watch a beta fish stare at its reflection while

you browse the day’s flavor selections,” Joe Doering

said.  “The design features were really meant to

develop a quirky, social atmosphere while creating an environment

prone to Kodak moments.”

“font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;”>This small town ice cream

shop is worth checking out, especially the caramel apple ice cream;

it’s to die for.
